U.S. Probation Internships

Looking for an internship or an early career opportunity?

The U.S. Probation Office for the District of Delaware Internship Program is committed to training and preparing highly qualified students through exposure and hands-on experience. An internship offers students an opportunity to observe and learn while contributing to the agency. The student intern will be exposed to a wide variety of tasks, projects, hearings, and interviews; students will develop a firm and concrete understanding of the role of the United States Probation Office within the larger criminal justice system.

Upon completion of the internship the student will have developed observation skills; interviewing techniques; writing skills; the ability to analyze and objectively deal with difficult situations; and the ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times.

Internship Opportunities

Opportunities are available for the following types of internships:

  • Criminal Justice
  • Social Work
  • Legal studies
  • Media/Production

Interns will be trained to

Assist U.S. Probation & Pretrial Services Officers analyzing, interpreting, and preparing criminal history record summaries; Shadow U.S. Probation & Pretrial Services Officers in the course of their duties; and Complete special projects as assigned.

Work Hours and Salary

Monday through Friday, minimum of 20 hours per week (schedule to be determined with potential candidates).

Internships are available, year-round, based out of our Wilmington office located at 824 N. Market Street, Suite 400, Wilmington, Delaware 19801.

Internships are non-paid positions.

Applicant Must

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or eligible to work in the United States.
  • Junior/senior or graduate student enrolled in a baccalaureate or master’s program in the study of criminal justice or related subject with a grade point average of 3.0 or above.
  • Successful completion of a background check that ensures the potential intern meets the strict requirements to be a volunteer with the U.S. Judiciary.
  • Excellent writing skills, analytical abilities, computer skills, interpersonal skills, and professional demeanor are required.
  • Have a high level of maturity, reliability, integrity, and confidentiality.

  • AO-78 application for internship
  • A cover letter expressing interest; the letter should include whether the applicant is seeking a full-time or part-time internship;
  • A resume;
  • A letter of recommendation from a professor or faculty member;
  • A copy of a current transcript (unofficial transcripts are acceptable);
  • A writing sample from any class; and
  • Contact information for the college’s internship coordinator.

A representative from our Internship Program will contact you following the receipt of your full application packet. We will then schedule an in-person interview with you at our Wilmington office. Please provide us with two weeks to process your application.
